Make tender sweet potatoes coated in a rich, buttery brown sugar glaze spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg. This easy oven-baked recipe is a perfect sweet and savory side dish for holidays or family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 lbs sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced into 1/2-inch rounds
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Arrange the sliced sweet potatoes in a single layer in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter, brown sugar, and water. Stir constantly until the sugar dissolves and the mixture simmers.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  5. Pour the brown sugar glaze evenly over the sweet potatoes in the baking dish.
  6. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
  7. Baste the potatoes with the glaze from the bottom of the dish every 15 minutes during baking.
  8. Serve warm as a holiday side dish or comfort food favorite.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, substitute 2 tablespoons of the brown sugar with maple syrup.
  • This recipe is naturally gluten free.
  • If you prefer a softer texture, cover the dish with foil for the first 30 minutes of baking.
