Ingredients
Scale
1 pound ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
1/2 cup milk
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon ketchup
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 cup elbow macaroni, uncooked
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
1/2 cup bread crumbs (optional topping)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
Brown the ground beef and chopped onion in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess grease.
Stir in the garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Cook for one minute.
In a large bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, mustard, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce until smooth.
Add the browned beef mixture, uncooked macaroni, and one and a half cups of the shredded cheddar cheese to the soup mixture. Stir everything to combine well.
Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish.
Bake uncovered for 25 minutes.
Remove the dish from the oven. Sprinkle the remaining half cup of cheese and the bread crumbs (if using) over the top.
Return to the oven and bake for another 5 to 10 minutes, or until the pasta is tender and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before you serve it.
Notes
For a tangier flavor similar to a special sauce, add 1/4 cup of finely chopped dill pickles to the beef mixture before baking.
You can substitute the elbow macaroni with 2 cups of cooked egg noodles or 3 cups of frozen tater tots placed on top during the last 15 minutes of baking.
This is a great make-ahead meal; assemble the casserole completely, cover it, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking. Add 10 minutes to the initial bake time if cooking straight from the refrigerator.
