Prepare this hearty, cheesy breakfast casserole the night before for a stress-free Christmas morning. It uses sourdough bread, savory sausage, and rich Gruyère cheese, serving a crowd easily.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound bulk pork sausage
  • 1 (8 ounce) package frozen bread cubes, thawed (or 8 cups cubed sourdough bread)
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 1 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon dried mustard powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Cook the sausage in a skillet over medium heat until browned. Drain off excess grease and set aside.
  2. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Distribute the thawed bread cubes evenly in the bottom of the dish.
  3. Sprinkle the cooked sausage, Gruyère cheese, and Cheddar cheese over the bread layer.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, Dijon mustard, mustard powder, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  5. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread and cheese layers in the baking dish. Gently press down on the bread to help it absorb the liquid.
  6. Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 8 hours, or preferably overnight.
  7. When ready to bake on Christmas morning, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Remove the plastic wrap.
  8. Bake uncovered for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the casserole is puffed, golden brown, and a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
  9. Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving this crowd pleaser breakfast.

Notes

  • For a slightly sweeter note, you can substitute half the sausage with diced ham.
  • If you need to bake this immediately without chilling, let the bread soak for 30 minutes before baking, and increase the baking time by about 5-10 minutes.
  • This recipe is a great option for a family breakfast for Christmas, as it reheats well the next day.
