Make this indulgent cream cheese stuffed French toast for a special weekend brunch centerpiece. This recipe uses thick bread stuffed with a sweet, creamy filling and pan-fried to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices thick bread (Brioche or Texas Toast recommended)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon butter, for cooking
  • Optional: Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Optional: Fresh berries or maple syrup for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cream cheese filling: In a small bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, 1/4 cup sugar, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the custard: In a shallow dish, whisk together the egg, milk, and cinnamon until fully combined.
  3. Assemble the toast: Take one slice of bread and spread half of the cream cheese mixture evenly over one side. Place a second slice of bread on top to form a sandwich. Gently press the edges together to seal the filling. Repeat with the remaining bread and filling to make four sandwiches.
  4. Cut the sandwiches in half diagonally to create four triangles, or leave them whole.
  5. Dip the stuffed sandwiches into the egg custard mixture, coating both sides quickly. Do not let the bread soak too long, as the filling may leak.
  6. Cook the french toast: Melt butter in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the stuffed french toast in the hot pan. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, until the bread is golden brown and crispy. Adjust heat as needed to cook through without burning the exterior.
  7. Serve immediately dusted with powdered sugar, or with your choice of syrup and fresh fruit.

Notes

  • For the best texture, use thick-cut bread like brioche. Thin bread may become soggy.
  • If you want to add fruit, gently spread a thin layer of fruit preserves (like strawberry or blueberry) over the cream cheese before placing the top slice of bread on.
  • To achieve a crispier exterior, use slightly less custard when dipping the bread.
  • You can prepare the cream cheese filling up to one day ahead and store it covered in the refrigerator.
