Make this simple French apple tart using a buttery, flaky crust and thinly sliced apples. This recipe delivers a classic dessert that is easy to prepare for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet store-bought puff pastry or homemade shortcrust pastry
  • 4 medium Gala or Honeycrisp apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon apricot jam or glaze (optional, for shine)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. If using homemade pastry, roll it out to about a 1/8-inch thickness. If using puff pastry, let it thaw slightly according to package directions. Place the pastry on the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Arrange the apple slices over the pastry in a decorative, overlapping pattern, leaving a 1-inch border around the edge. You can create concentric circles for a classic look.
  4. Brush the melted butter evenly over the apples.
  5. In a small bowl, mix the granulated sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle this mixture over the apples.
  6. Fold the 1-inch pastry border up and over the edges of the apples to create a rustic crust edge.
  7. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  8. If desired, warm the apricot jam slightly and brush it over the warm apples for a glossy finish.
  9. Let the apple tart cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For a crisp bottom crust, place the baking sheet in the oven while it preheats.
  • Use firm apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for the best texture that holds up during baking.
  • If you prefer a caramelized apple tart, sprinkle 1 tablespoon of brown sugar over the apples before baking.
