Ingredients
Scale
4 medium apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 (8 ounce) package refrigerated crescent roll dough
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
Peel, core, and cut each apple into 8 wedges. Place the apple wedges in a medium bowl and toss them with the lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until coated.
Unroll the crescent roll dough onto a clean surface. Separate the dough into 8 triangles.
Place a portion of the spiced apple mixture onto the wide end of each dough triangle.
Roll the dough up around the apples, starting from the wide end, tucking in the sides slightly to seal the filling. Place the rolled dumplings, seam-side down, in the prepared baking dish.
In a small saucepan, combine the butter, brown sugar, and water. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the butter is melted and the sugar is dissolved. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. This is your buttery brown sugar sauce.
Pour the brown sugar sauce evenly over the apple dumplings in the baking dish.
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the sauce is bubbly.
Let the apple dumplings cool slightly before serving warm, perhaps with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
For a Pennsylvania Dutch style, use a whole peeled apple instead of wedges, ensuring the dough completely covers it.
If you prefer a thinner sauce, add 1/4 cup of water or milk to the sauce mixture before pouring.
This recipe is a great comfort food dessert for busy weeknights.
