Make rich, creamy chocolate milk from scratch in minutes. This recipe uses simple cocoa powder for a satisfying, low sugar alternative to store-bought mixes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups Milk (dairy or non-dairy)
  • 2 tablespoons Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons Granulated Sugar (adjust to taste for low sugar chocolate milk)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • Pinch of Salt

Instructions

  1. Combine the unsweetened cocoa powder, sugar, and salt in a small bowl or directly in the glass you plan to use.
  2. Add about 2 tablespoons of the milk to the dry ingredients. Stir vigorously until you form a smooth, thick paste. This step prevents lumps in your final drink.
  3. Pour in the remaining milk and the vanilla extract.
  4. Stir or whisk the mixture well until everything is fully combined and the chocolate milk is uniform in color.
  5. Taste the drink. Add more sugar if you prefer it sweeter, or a tiny bit more cocoa for a richer chocolate beverage.
  6. Serve immediately over ice for a refreshing chocolate beverage, or chilled.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use whole milk or a creamy non-dairy option like oat milk.
  • If you want to make a chocolate milk powder mix for later use, combine 1 cup cocoa powder, 1 cup sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon salt in an airtight container. Use 3 tablespoons of the mix per cup of milk.
  • To make whipped chocolate milk, reserve 1/4 cup of the milk and whisk it vigorously with the cocoa and sugar paste until frothy before adding the rest of the cold milk.
