Make this rich, creamy Mississippi Mud Pie, a classic Southern dessert. It features a chocolate cookie crust, fudgy filling, and fluffy topping for an indulgent, satisfying treat.
1 (12 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed, for topping
Chocolate shavings, for garnish
Instructions
Prepare the crust: Mix cookie crumbs, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, and melted butter in a bowl. Press the mixture firmly into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch pie plate. Chill the crust for 15 minutes.
Make the cream cheese layer: Beat the softened cream cheese until smooth. Gradually beat in the powdered sugar, 1/2 cup milk, and vanilla extract until the mixture is creamy. Fold in half of the thawed whipped topping. Spread this mixture evenly over the chilled crust.
Make the pudding layer: In a separate bowl, whisk together the instant chocolate pudding mix and 2 cups of cold milk until the mixture thickens, about 2 minutes. Spread the pudding mixture over the cream cheese layer.
Top the pie: Spread the remaining half of the first container of whipped topping over the pudding layer. Cover the pie loosely with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or until firm.
Serve: Before serving, top the pie with the second container of thawed whipped topping and sprinkle with chocolate shavings. Slice and serve cold.
Notes
For an Oreo crust dessert, substitute chocolate wafer cookies with Oreo cookies, leaving the cream filling in.
This make ahead dessert tastes best when chilled for 6 hours or overnight.
If you prefer a frozen dessert recipes variation, use coffee ice cream instead of the pudding layer and freeze until solid.
