Make rich, creamy eggnog from scratch easily. This recipe delivers a festive, traditional flavor superior to store-bought versions, with options to spike it with your favorite spirits.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 quart whole milk
  • 1 pint heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg, plus extra for garnish
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Optional: 1 cup bourbon, dark rum, or brandy

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs and sugar together until the mixture is pale yellow and slightly thickened. This takes about 3 to 5 minutes.
  2. Slowly whisk in the whole milk and heavy cream until fully combined.
  3. Stir in the vanilla extract, ground nutmeg, and ground cinnamon.
  4. If you are making spiked eggnog, stir in your chosen alcohol now. If you are making non-alcoholic eggnog, skip this step.
  5. Cover the mixture and chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld and the mixture to thicken.
  6. Before serving, whisk the eggnog again to recombine any separated ingredients.
  7. Pour into glasses and garnish each serving with a light dusting of fresh ground nutmeg.

Notes

  • For a richer, custard-style eggnog, you can gently heat the milk and cream mixture before tempering it into the egg yolks (do not boil).
  • If you prefer a smoother texture without the slight graininess from raw eggs, you can temper the yolks with hot milk and cook the mixture until it thickens slightly before cooling and adding the cream.
  • Freshly grated nutmeg provides the best flavor for this holiday beverage.
