Make a rich, gooey chocolate cake in a single mug using your microwave. This recipe delivers a satisfying single-serve dessert in under five minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 4 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 3 Tbsp milk (any kind)
  • 1 Tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 Tbsp chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a standard microwave-safe mug, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt until no lumps remain.
  2. Add the milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients.
  3. Stir everything together with a fork until just combined. Do not overmix; a few small lumps are acceptable.
  4. Stir in the chocolate chips, if using.
  5. Place the mug in the microwave. Cook on high power for 60 to 90 seconds. Cooking time varies by microwave wattage. Start with 60 seconds and check for doneness. The top should look set but still slightly moist.
  6. Let the mug cake cool for one minute before eating directly from the mug.

Notes

  • For a fudgier texture, slightly undercook the cake by 5-10 seconds.
  • If you do not have vegetable oil, you can substitute melted butter.
  • Top with a scoop of ice cream or a dusting of powdered sugar for extra flavor.
