Make this easy Tater Tot Casserole with ground beef and creamy mushroom soup for a satisfying, quick weeknight dinner. This family favorite bakes up with a savory filling and a crispy topping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 bag (32 ounces) frozen tater tots

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the ground beef and chopped onion in a large skillet over medium heat until the beef is browned and the onion is soft. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Stir the cream of mushroom soup, milk, salt, and pepper into the beef mixture until combined. Spread this mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  4. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the beef layer.
  5. Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer over the cheese. Do not thaw the tots first.
  6. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the filling is bubbly and the tater tots are golden brown and crispy.
  7. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before you serve it.

Notes

  • For crispier tots, you can bake the tots on a separate baking sheet for 10 minutes before layering them over the filling.
  • Use a low-sodium soup if you are watching your salt intake.
  • This is a great freezer friendly casserole; assemble completely, cover tightly, and freeze before baking. Add about 15 minutes to the bake time if cooking from frozen.
