Make the best vanilla buttercream frosting that is creamy, fluffy, and holds its shape for piping. This simple American buttercream recipe delivers rich vanilla flavor and a smooth texture for your cakes and cupcakes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 34 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 24 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Place the softened butter in a large mixing bowl. Beat the butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until it is very smooth and creamy, about 2 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
  2. Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low speed until combined after each addition.
  3. Add the vanilla extract and salt. Increase the mixer speed to medium-high and beat for 3 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy.
  4. If the frosting is too stiff, add heavy cream or milk, one tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired smooth frosting recipe consistency for spreading or piping. If it is too soft, add more powdered sugar, one quarter cup at a time.
  5. Beat on high speed for one final minute to incorporate air for a fluffy vanilla frosting texture. Use immediately for decorating cakes or cupcakes.

Notes

  • For the best piping buttercream consistency, use room temperature butter that is soft but not melted.
  • Sifting the powdered sugar prevents lumps and helps create a smooth frosting recipe.
  • If you need a whiter frosting, substitute clear vanilla extract for the standard extract.
  • This classic vanilla icing is a great base; add a pinch of lemon zest for a bright flavor variation.
